The first Eleven Cities Tour on ice-skates was held in Friesland in 1763. Outside the ice-skating season the Eleven Cities Tour is also very popular. Fortunately, there are various other ways in which the route can be traveled, e.g. on foot, by bike, by canoe, on horseback, by boat, by motorbike or by car. Nature, culture and adventure. The route takes you through attractive woods and lovely countrysides, past numerous lakes, beaches and the Wadden Sea, past traditional Frisian farmsteads and eleven charming cities. Friesland is rich in culture and adventure. It has a glorious past. Waddling - Mudflat hiking
The Waddensea is one of the final places in the Netherlands where nature is relatively wild. It is a wonderful landscape where, among other things, it is possible to walk. Wadlopen (to waddle/waddling) is walking in the Waddensea on a partial dry sea bottom.
Waddling is possible around the moment of low water when the Waddensea is emptying itself during ebb and when it fills itself shortly after low water. It is possible to make a waddletour to islands and sandplates like Terschelling, Ameland, Engelsmanplaat, Schiermonnikoog, Simonszand and Rottumeroog. Furthermore, it is possible to roam the mudflats of Pinkegat and Eilanderbult north of Paesens-Moddergat. Read more >>>

You won't be able to miss spotting the Planetarium in Franeker because of its characteristic Dutch (bell shaped) gable. People believed that the world was going to end in 1774, and this led to the founding of the planetarium. The founder, a certain Eisinga, wanted to show what was really taking place in the heavens. The planetarium is a fascinating place to visit, and will also tell you a lot about travel in space.
