'GRAND DUTCH DISCOVERY TOUR'
THE DUTCH DELTA WORKS
By 1958 the first Deltawork was already operational. It was the storm barrier in the river Hollandse Ijssel. This barrier (not a dam) was of great importance because it protected the densely populated western part of the Netherlands (known as 'the Randstad') against future flooding. Three years later, in 1961, two more mouths were closed: the Veerse Gat and the Zandkreek. The water between these dams soon became fresh and is now known as the Veerse Meer (Lake of Veere). DID YOU KNOW ...
That a second major project in the Netherlands' fight against the water is the Delta project. The construction of the Delta works (Delta Werken) started after a devastating storm surge hit the low-lying polders of the southwest Netherlands on 1. February 1953, killing more than 1.800 people and flooding large areas of land.
Brouws Museum
The small town Brouwershaven located on the northernmost island in Zeeland, Schouwen-Duiveland, can proudly look back on a rich maritime history.
On the one hand a harbour for the transfer of goods, and on the other hand a home base for fishermen. Yet it was not only commerce and fishery that determined the image of the harbour.

Domburg >>> Domburg is perhaps best known for its hosting of a group of artists of which Piet Mondraan or Mondrian is the best known. His Pier and Ocean painting was inspired by the same location where James McNeil Whistler painted the Domburg sea with its characteristic piers which do not cater for the happy crowd but are meant to break waves that may damage the dunes and thus the existence of the place.
Oosterschelde National Park is a tidal area. At low tide, the sandbanks and salt marshes are laid dry. A great number of birds gather here to feed, rest or breed.
