Overijssel is a province with several beautiful natural reserves such as De Weeribben, Los Hoos and Oomen. Overijssel has a rich past. There was a time, towards the end of the Middle Ages, that one of the province's biggest cities Deventer was larger than Amsterdam. The old city of Kampen located on the IJsselriver, has more than 500 registered historical monuments.
Blokzijl is a town with a rich history. In the Golden Age, Blokzijl was a thriving center of commerce on the Zuyder Zee. The period was marked by the constant coming and going of ships and it was during this time that the town's merchants gave Blokzijl its characteristic city scape. The 17th century church, the first protestant church in Holland, is well worth a visit. In the entirely rebuilt Museum 't Gildenhuys one can view a video presentation about Blokzijl's past and present.
Deventer, as we know it today, is a dynamic town, firmly rooted in history and surrounded by a unique landscape. Deventer has its "Cake"! For over 400 years now the city enjoys international fame because of the high quality of the gingerbread. In the little shop of cake factory Jb. Bussink on the Brink, fresh cake is made every day. Deventer is observed as one of the oldest cities of our country.

Giethorn. Characteristic canals, high and narrow bridges, little farmhouses with thatched roofs, punts instead of cars, these are the features that make Giethoorn - the Venice of the North - one of the most visually striking villages in Holland. Giethoorn is not to be missed, and the best way to view it is by boat tour or punt. These can be hired at the waterside by the car-parking areas.
You can tie up your punt at any of the three museums

Hasselt is a town about 4 miles north of Zwolle, in the Dutch provinceof Overijssel. It received city rights in 1252. It became a member of the Hanseatic League around 1350. Hasselt is the capital city of the municipality Zwartewaterland. In 2001, the municipalities Hasselt, Genemuiden and Zwartsluis are united in one municipality: Zwartewaterland.
The "Grote Kerk" or "Sint Stephanuskerk" can always be admired from afar. It is not the only eye catcher in the Hanseatic city. The protected city center is actually one big well-preserved monument with charming views, beautiful bridges, attractive canal side houses and historic gables.
Kampen developed into an important city in the 12th and 13th centuries thanks to trade and shipping. The IJssel became an important waterway and the arrival of the Kogge ship played a major role here. Kampen had turned into a powerful trade center. The IJssel and the connection that Kampen has with water, still determines the townscape of Kampen. A reconstruction of a Kogge ship can be seen in the Oude Buitenhaven near the Koggewerf (the wharf).

Staphorst. Walk around in the village of Staphorst, nearly 7.5 miles long, with a highly religious culture and history of its own. The farmhouses are decorated in unique color schemes, and traditional costumes are still worn daily by the elderly people, not to please the tourists but simply because that's what they wear. Photography is accordingly frowned upon unless permission is obtained first, and is not allowed at all on Sundays.

Steenwijk. The old fortress of Steenwijk is the economic, social and cultural center of the Kop of Overijssel. It is situated in an attractive rural area that contains three country estates with an area of almost 3,000 acres. Delightful cycling and walking routes criss-cross the area. Another attraction is the Kermis- en Circusmuseum (Fun Fair and Circus Museum) as well as the 280 feet high tower of the Sint Clemens Church that dates back to 1467.
Also of interest is the Villa Rams Woerthe, an imposing country house from 1899 built in the Jugendstil Style, which contains the Hildo Krop room. Various works by this famous sculptor are on display here. Of special interest are the large stained glass window and the fine murals. Read more >>>
